Abstract

This article examines synthetic gemstones through wholesale advertising published in Kultaseppien lehti in 1926–1959 and explores meanings created by it. Synthetic gemstones are minerals created in laboratories and mass-produced in factories. Identifying them requires special expertise and equipment. In Finland, synthetic gems became mundane in jewellery making by the end of the 1920s.

Synthetic gemstones were advertised in Kultaseppien lehti in 1928–1935 and in the 1950s, when promoting them was particularly abundant. The article suggests that synthetic gemstones emphasized the importance of trust in the wholesale chain by highlighting the insufficiency of gemmological knowledge among trade members. Synthetic gemstones also played a significant role in the development of jewellery making as the trade pushed its way through the material shortage created by the war towards the success of modern Finnish jewelry and serial production.
