In this article, I present seven homicides in the 19th century that were investigated by the police. I will focus on the material produced by that investigation, namely the police investigation reports, and in particular on the nature of the documents, how they changed during the period under investigation, and the way in which the police encountered or obtained information about persons who were mentally ill. I will also discuss the authors of the protocols and their role as officers and investigators at the scene of the crime. The study reveals that towards the end of the 19th century, the protocols became more formalised and interconnected, both in terms of content and structure.
