Abstract

In this article I analyze how in Russian television the western mass media has been interpreted to be a group that misleads their audience regarding perceptions of Russia. The context I used is early news and discussion coverage about the Malaysian Boeing MH17 that was shot in Eastern Ukraine in 2014. The interpretation of western media as a suspicious agent did not dominate all the news coverage, but it appeared to be familiar and uncontested when it was referred to. The discourses (re-)produced security connection to international media usage for Russians.
