Abstract

This artistic research article discusses the ways in which the historical multilayeredness of the musical Hair was constructed and deconstructed in the contemporary performance Hair – Fifty years after (Tampere University 2019). The latter is compared with Hiukset, the first Finnish adaptation of Hair which premièred in Tampere in 1969, and with the original Broadway production from 1968. The aim is to recognize the ways and the dramaturgical methods by means of which a contemporary performance remembers and reminisces past productions and their contexts. Moreover, the article opens perspectives on how historical performance materials, in general, can be utilized in contemporary forms.
