Abstract

In my article, I examine the history and goals of film and television design education in Finland at the beginning of the 21st century. Previously, teaching in the field was given in connection with stage design at the University of Industrial Arts Helsinki, but the establishment of a separate curriculum for the purpose in 2003 meant the disintegration of unified education. The change was considerable, and I aim to evaluate the suggested background factors: 1) the change in the field of film and television at the turn of the millennium, 2) the new art pedagogical thinking related to European film education and the models it produced, and 3) the development of film technology, especially in terms of digital visualization methods. In this context, I consider how the professional images and identities related to this kind of design profession take shape and what creates the need for preservation or renewal. Finally, I outline my thoughts on the cinematic space and the artistic and technological conventions associated with the verification of that space, which I see as the basis of the specific professional practice of production design.
