Apprenticeships in a flexible education system

Abstract

The article is a description of on-the-job training in Finland, how widespread it is, and how it is distributed according to occupation and gender. The authors assess the appropriateness of apprenticeship training as a form of working life training and conclude that it is an extremely good and economic form of training. Nevertheless, it should not be resorted to as a means of meeting enterprises’ temporary labour force needs. The nature of the routine work often associated with apprenticeship training reveals a more extensive problem of the working life – working life fails to meet the demand for satisfying work.
