By applying theories of new materialism, the article explores the materiality of reminiscing and the interplay of memory mediums (i.e. photographs, language, digital technologies, artefacts) through three case studies that represent diverse forms of vernacular remembrance and history creation. The article asks, firstly, what materiality and multimediality of vernacular remembrance means, and secondly, what kinds of aspects the analysis of interplay and affordances of mediums reveal in vernacular remembrance and history creation. Moreover, the goal of the article is to diversify the discussions within the study of vernacular mnemonic practices, which have firmly focused on verbal and narrative aspects of memory and history creation.
