The Finnish Crime Museum, with its long history and wide variety of interesting items, evokes exciting associations of the history of crime. The museum has, however, remained relatively obscure to the general public, museum professionals and scholars alike. This article explores the founding and early development of the museum, which was established in 1936 at the Crime Investigation Centre, predecessor of the current National Bureau of Investigation. The discussion focuses on the 1930s and 1940s, during which the basis of the crime history collection was created and a general perception of the museum took form. The history of the Crime Museum also provides new perspectives on the Crime Investigation Centre as an expert bureau within the police force, and its role in police education is also discussed.
