Author Guidelines

Näyttämö ja tutkimus accepts the following types of submissions for publication: research articles, reviews, essays, other texts presenting research and its authors, lectiones praecursoriae, and book reviews. For the requirements with regard to the different text types, see the section-specific guidelines below.

Texts submitted (except for lectiones praecursoriae and book reviews, see below for details in regard to them) must be accompanied by an abstract in the language in which the article is written. The abstract shall not exceed 1 500 characters in length and shall function as an independent text.

Articles to be published should include an abstract in Finnish and/or English (i.e., an abstract in Finnish for articles written in English, or in English for articles written in Finnish or Swedish). The author is responsible for the translation and proofreading of their abstract. An English translation of the title of the work must be included too.

In addition to the abstract, the author shall provide at least 5 keywords.

The manuscript offered to the editorial team must be polished in content and style. In the case of a submitted text not complying with the author guidelines below, it will be returned to the author for compliance. Only after the text is corrected will any further progression in the publication process be undertaken.

Please do not submit the manuscript to another journal at the same time. Näyttämö ja tutkimus will not accept such submissions.

Formatting guidelines

Use Times New Roman or another basic font (size 12 points) throughout the text and apply 1.5 line spacing. Do not use automatic extra spacing between paragraphs.

Write headings in bold and separate them from the preceding text by an extra line break. Please note that special formatting such as styles (Heading, Title, etc.) or automatic numbering should not be used in the text. Do not hyphenate words. Do not capitalise text, not even headings in full. Use sentence case in headings.

In the body text, indent the beginning of paragraphs. When indenting, do not use the space bar, but an indent or the tab key.

Quotations longer than two sentences are entirely indented. Do not use quotation marks for indented quotations. Do not italicise quotations either.

Beware of unnecessary spaces: for example, leave only one space between words and sentences. There is always and only one space after a comma and a full stop. It is easier to spot this if you select the Show All Characters option in your word processor or do a search for double spaces. Furthermore, please do not press the space bar at the end of a paragraph. Also, beware of adding extra line breaks at the end of paragraphs.

Use double quotation marks (" "). Please note that single quotation marks (' ') are only used in special cases, for example, in quotations within a quotation.

Use [--] to indicate words omitted from a quotation. Indicate your own additions within square brackets: [for example, like this].

For citations, please only use Arabic numerals for footnotes (see Citations and reference list below).

Abbreviations (i.e., e.g.) are not used in the body text, but are allowed in footnotes.

Use italics for foreign words (corps de ballet) and titles of works (Crash), and to show emphasis. As for quotations, the author's own emphasis shall be distinguished from that of the source being quoted with a mention in the citation (‘emphasis in the original’ or ‘emphasis added’).

When expressing a duration of time or extreme values, use an en dash (–) without spaces, not a hyphen (-). That is: 5–6 litres, in the 1920s–1930s, 15–20 km, 70–80 years old.

Visual and audiovisual material

You can attach supporting photos, diagrams, or audiovisual material to the article. The material should not be illustrative, but should be substantially related to the contents of the article.

Video material relating to submitted texts will be published on the journal’s Vimeo channel. However, please submit videos along with the text in the Journal.fi service. Vimeo supports just about any kind of video file, including these common formats: MP4, MOV, WMV, AVI, and FLV.

The image resolution must be at least 150 ppi. The recommended format for image files is .jpg/.tiff.

For layout purposes, descriptions and captions for images, diagrams, and audiovisual elements shall be written in a separate paragraph within the body text, beginning with a hashtag (#), without indentation. Do not write these texts in italics or bold. To ensure accessibility, also include an alternative text (alt text) for the images. For more information, see e.g. the following: https://op.europa.eu/en/web/accessibility/trancript-alternative-text.

The authors are responsible for clearing copyright in accordance with the law as it applies in Finland. The authors are wholly liable for any possible compensation or legal costs arising in regard to the usage of copyrighted material they submit to the journal.

Citations and reference list

Citations and the reference list shall be written based on The Chicago Manual of Style. For more information, see http://www.chicagomanualofstyle.org/tools_citationguide.html => select Go to Author-Date Style to see Sample Citations.

Articles

Peer-reviewed articles are expected to comply with the principles of scientific and/or artistic research and thereby generate new knowledge.

When peer reviewing articles, peer reviewers are asked to pay attention to the points outlined on the page titled For peer reviewer. Authors should also familiarise themselves with the peer review guidelines and take them into account when writing.

The recommended length of articles is 40 000–60 000 characters (including spaces, footnotes, and references).

When submitting an article for peer review, please anonymise your text carefully. Therefore, do not name the file with your own name, and remove the author information from the metadata in your word processor. Also, do not use wording that gives you away (e.g., not ‘I have previously discussed the issue in my article...’, but ‘Researcher X has discussed the issue...’). Where possible, this also applies when discussing your own artistic work. Anonymize references in the reference list to your own work. References to the author shall be returned to the text after peer review.

Review Articles

A review article introduces a research field within the realm of performing arts. A review can, for example, be methodological in nature or present specific data. New information produced by a review may therefore be of an analytical and synthesising nature.

The recommended length of review articles is 20 000–30 000 characters (including spaces, footnotes, and references).

As a rule, reviews are not peer reviewed. However, upon the request of the author, review is possible for justified reasons.

Essays

An essay is a reflective piece of writing in which the author can address a topic of their choice, for example, in the context of scientific/artistic research or practical work. Essays do not go through a peer review process. The recommended length is 20 000–30 000 characters (including spaces, footnotes, and references).

About research

You can offer texts to the About research section, that: present either ongoing or completed research projects; report on conferences and seminars held; or deal with current topics related to research structures. The style of texts published in this section is journalistic. In addition to reports or news-style writing, the text may be written as an interview in the form of a dialogue. In this section, obituaries of researchers can also be published. The suggested length is 5 000–10 000 characters (including spaces, footnotes, and references).

Lectiones praecursoriae

Näyttämö ja tutkimus publishes lectiones praecursoriae held at public examinations of doctoral dissertations. In principle, the texts are published in the form in which they were presented at the examination. However, the text must also work in written form, so it is advisable to improve its readability by adding elements such as subheadings. Sources must be cited in accordance with the formatting guidelines.

At the beginning of the text, and in the abstract field of the Journal.fi service, include information on the public examination, using the following example:

The public defence of X.X.’s doctoral dissertation in [subject, e.g. Acting / Theatre Research, …] was held at [university] on [date]. Y.Y. (University of …) acted as Opponent and D.D. (University of …) as Custos.

Book reviews

Näyttämö ja tutkimus publishes book reviews in the field of performing arts research. To avoid overlaps, prospective authors are asked to contact the editorial team before writing their review. The author shall then obtain the book to be reviewed from the publisher.

The desirable maximum length of a book review is 8 000–10 000 characters (including spaces, footnotes, and references). If there are several books to be reviewed, the length of the review can be negotiated.

At the beginning of the review and in the abstract field of the Journal.fi service, include information on the book reviewed using the following examples:

Pirkko Koski: Finland's National Theatre 1974–1991. The Two Decades of Generational Contests, Cultural Upheavals, and International Cold War Politics. Routledge Advances in Theatre & Performance Studies. Routledge 2022. 288 pages.
