A prisoner in an authority relationship?
A case study on students in primary school teacher education
Abstract
A grown-up, autonomous and responsible university student sounds good in festive speeches, but the reality is different. This article challenges the idea that students automatically take responsibility, examining them as part of a hierarchical education system. It is discussed how the supervisor’s position of authority directs students’ experience and, consequently, their actions and how they take responsibility for their studies. The article is based on a study of integration training in the primary school teacher-training programme at Jyväskylä University.
