The development of lifelong education
its premises and problems
Abstract
The principle of lifelong education has been adopted as the fundamental guideline of educational planning and development in Finland. The implementation of continuing education has been a subject dealt with by several committees and working groups. Nevertheless, it seems that this principle has not been understood in sufficient depth and that there are many problems in applying it into practice. The solving of these problems will require a greater degree of focusing of theoretical discussion and the putting into practice of the necessary measures. The article presents an outline of the relationships between lifelong education and continuing education and certain other closely associated concepts. The article also looks into the forms that lifelong education can take and their significance from the point of view development work. Certain special characteristics of the research in this sector are also presented.
