State of transition as a tool for self-understanding in adult education

Abstract

The point of departure in this article is the observation that units specializing in adult education will find it necessary to review their own relationship with the changes taking place in the working life. The tools of self-understanding are needed when reflecting on the role to be taken. The author brings to our attention two possible positions that education might assume. One is that of seeking a close connection to development while the other form of activity is envisaged as being attainable via state of transition examination. The author is of the opinion that adult education is rarely seen as being a state during which the premises for restructuring of knowledge and activity are established. Adult education can also be assessed as being a network that makes possible the creation of new knowledge that is born with the help of collaborative structures constructed during the state of transition. The purpose of this article is to encourage adult education planners, implementors and researchers to give consideration not only to the limitations but also the potentials of the activity.
