Adult education at the crossroads

The literacy dilemma in the U.S.

Abstract

The purpose of this article is to provide a brief overview of the current status of illiteracy in the United States, some of the reasons why the problem is so great in this country, some of the current policy positions that exist among educational decision-makers, some of the kinds of literacy programs that are being offered and by whom they are provided, some of the sources of funding that currently exist, the relationship of the American Association For Adult and Continuing Education to the literacy problem and finally, some suggestions for the future of literacy education in America.
