Abstract

School memories have recently aroused wider research interest. They have the potential to shed light on societal and educational changes in Finland through personal micro-level experiences. In this article, the field and characteristics of school memory studies in Finland are reviewed. At the end of this review, I suggest that although there are some school memory studies, particularly village school memories in the rural areas need further attention due to the significance of the rural context in the Finnish childhoods. Rural school memories have the possibility to examine wider societal and cultural processes through individual experiences in constantly changing rural areas.
