Net migration flows between the provinces of those with a bachelor's degree

Abstract

A change in one region leads to changes elsewhere. The establishment of universities of applied sciences increased the regional accessibility of higher education but was unable to equalize the differences in the distribution of human capital. This article is about the inter-provincial migration of young people with a bachelor’s degree in three major fields of education. It focusses on net migration between provinces from1996 to 2018 and is based on education statistics. The differences between periods and field of education were large. At the turn of the 21st century graduates moved diligently in all educational fields. In many areas the overall net migration gain was based entirely on the mobility of those years. In engineering the net migration flow to Uusimaa grew continuously, while the attraction of North Ostrobothnia ended by 2007. In the field of health, the most attractive and constantly growing province was Pirkanmaa. In the overall picture, Lapland, Kainuu, Central Ostrobothnia, Ostrobothnia and Satakunta had net migration losses compared to all other provinces.
