Abstract

The purpose of this paper is to describe the main characteristics of Finnish health care system during the last two centuries. The focus of the paper is especially on the origin, function and development of hospitals. In addition, university hospitals, organisations that emerged after the post-war period, are in scope of interest. It is being argued in the paper that the organisational renewals together with the development in clinical routines as well as medical knowhow are tightly combined.
