Abstract

This paper discusses J.A. Hollo`s theory of education and his view on the world of education. Hollo (1885–1967) was a very famous and outstanding Finnish educational theorist and translator, who argues that the world of education is a relatively autonomous form of life, which cannot be reduced to philosophical ethics or psychology. His view resembles e.g. Wittgenstein`s concept of the forms of life (Lebensform) and Husserl`s life-world (Lebenswelt). The Article also studies Hollo´s “let (somebody) grow” -thought (wachsen lassen), which can be understood in many interesting ways. Hollo´s main pedagogical works Mielikuvitus ja sen kasvattaminen (Imagination and its development 1918,1919), Kasvatuksen teoria (The theory of education, 1927) and Kasvatuksen maailma (The world of education, 1927) are very important and inspiring contributions even to nowadays' discussion concerning the world of education.
