Abstract

The subject of this review is road safety education for preschoolers, originally a thesis. Functional methods and social pedagogical way of thinking in road safety education and early childhood education are emphasized. We see road safety education as teaching, educating and guiding. The meaning is to spread the knowledge of safe behavior in traffic. Social pedagogy helps the individual to grow to be part of the society and behave as a member of the community. Therefore we see road safety education as citizenship education, that helps the individual to behave by the norms of the community. The aspect of citizenship education comes true in road safety education via traffic rules set by the community and teaching the right ways to act in traffic. The meaning is not, however, to obey the rules slavishly, but to see the common good and to make it the way of thinking and acting. The introduced thesis was conducted functionally as a road safety education project in a pre-school located in Lahti. Common ways for social pedagogical education are functional and communal methods, because when the mindset comes to act, it can help the children to grow to be an independent member of the society. The social pedagogical side of road safety education does not limit itself only to the execution of road safety education but can also be realized in the planning of road safety education and traffic arrangements.
