Fanonian violence through the eyes of Freirean pedagogy

Conversations around racial equity in Finland are beginning to emerge in academic research, including how racist histories have contributed to today’s discriminatory social structures. However, in relation to educational studies, there has been little contemplation on how idealisation of white normativity continues to produce Otherness in educational settings. The aim of this study is to invite the reader to recognise racist epistemology as a strategy which has falsely justified white supremacy, and to suggest pedagogical solutions that challenge racial inequity. More specifically, I will evaluate the theories of Franz Fanon, The Wretched of the Earth (published originally 1961), and Paulo Freire, Pedagogy of the Oppressed (published originally 1968) to explore how Fanonian concept of violence and Freirean praxis, entwined, might offer us a starting point for antiracism pedagogy in Finland.
