Abstract

What happens when three social scientists and three performing arts professionals organize a local bar event dealing with issues of immigration and racism? Puhekupla (Speech Bubble) events were created in collaboration with researchers and artists, and they were based on the practices of participatory theater and principles of dialogue. The aim of the events was to create spaces, in which people representing diverse views may share their experiences and outlooks on immigration and intercultural encounters. In this article we present the background and content of this event concept and reflect on the premises and consequences of our collaboration. We analyse the emotions that arose in the events and reflect on the special characteristics of project work. We frame the Puhekupla events as public social pedagogy that facilitates people coming together and revives the traditions of collective discussion
and public deliberation which are rooted in the ideals of freedom and pluralism. In the events individual experiences, emotions and play, as well as joint discussions and research knowledge related to immigration functioned to train the ability for dialogic talk which is a precondition for a dynamic democracy.
